About the DFCI/ALL Consortium

Since 1973, we have investigated children diagnosed with ALL in a consecutive series of clinical trials based at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  The DFCI/ALL Consortium began in 1981 and gradually grew in the 1980s and 1990s when members of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Children's Hospital staff became Division Chiefs in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, University of Rochester Medical Center. A traditional referral source, the Maine Children's Cancer program, joined the Consortium at its inception.  Investigators at the three Canadian centers all joined selectively (between 1985 and 1993) based on their desire to participate in the clinical trials and related research programs. In 2003, Tulane University Hospital and Clinic also joined the Consortium.  We now have a group of nine collaborating institutions who collectively accrue newly diagnosed pediatric patients for treatment.  In 2001, research investigating adult ALL began within the Consortium.

The clinical and administrative structure of the Consortium is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Stephen Sallan) who is supported in these efforts by (Dr. Richard Gelber) from the Department of Biostatistical Science at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, as well as clinical research support personnel in the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Quality Assurance Office for Clinical Trials.
